How To Purchase Cycling Shirts

Before you head out and start looking through your local retailers supply of cycling shirts, you are going to want to consider a few things.  Too often, cyclists will rush out to buy the latest, greatest gear which could easily leave them over budget.  To avoid frustrations, think about these three things while you are looking for new gear.

First, consider the fit of your cycling shirts.  You may want to think about purchasing the clothing one size smaller than you would normally wear.  This will help you avoid any excess material getting in your way, or holding in body heat while you are riding.  The clothes will probably shrink down another size after you wash and dry them a few times, which can help them stay closer to your body as well.

You will also need to look at the colors that you purchase.  High visibility colors such as orange, yellow, silver, and reflective white are excellent choices for cycling t shirts.  You will want to make sure that you avoid neutral colors such as tans, browns, greens, and different shades of blue.  These colors will force you to blend into your surroundings, which could cause problems when you are riding near vehicle traffic.

Think about the climate that you live in while you are purchasing new clothing.  If you live in a cooler climate, you will want to think about long sleeved cycling shirts to help keep your body heat in.  However, being in a warmer, humid climate, you are going to need to buy materials that will allow you to sweat, and release body heat as needed.  Moisture wicking shirts are perfect, because they remove the excess body heat, and sweat, allowing you to remain cool.  Moisture wicking shirts are an excellent choice for riding during the summer, regardless where you live.

Who invented table top wargaming?

The idea of wargaming had been around in the military who used it to plan and try out various scenarios and skills as they rehearsed their battles, without actually seeing any blood shed.  It would generally involve moving various symbols around a representation of the battle field.

Then in 1913 the pacifist and author HG Wells reputedly sat down and actually created some rules of how a game could be played on the floor using toy soldiers.  This game apparently grew out of an incident with a friend who was visiting, and they came up with the idea of moving, shooting and defending as was appropriate.  In fact you can still get the book, Little Wars, from Project Gutenberg for free.

From this initial start, the wargaming phenomena didn’t really take off until the 1950’s when the first major release of a board game approached what modern tabletop wargaming has become.  It acquired a small following during the 60’s, but the simple rules of Wells were really fleshed out in the ‘70’s.

There became more and more people who wanted to game different scenarios, and re-enact battles from history, as well as science fiction and the like, to see if they as generals would fair any better than their real world predecessors.

Of course that meant rules.  Rules were needed so that the real world physics and actions could be applied to the time-dilated table top battle field.  Rules which need tables of numbers, and columns of results.  Rules which needed measurements to be made.  Rules which needed dice rolls to create random events or see if an imaginary bullet pierced the armoured imaginary tank.

Today, those different rules for engagement for different genres of wargaming from science fiction, to prehistoric,  factual and fantastic have made wargaming what it is.  And many young lads and lasses who have struggled to find friends have discovered shelter in the hallowed halls of dice rollers and orc slayers and become pilots of fighter jets such as those in Wings of War.

And all thanks to HG Wells and his toy soldiers.

Cornhole Bean Bags – The Different Pitches

Many people wrongly assume that there is only one way to pitch cornhole bean bags, but this simply isn’t the truth.  The fact of the matter is that there are different tosses for different situations.  Much like a baseball pitcher might vary his throws between fastballs, curves, and sliders, the advanced cornhole player has a bag full of tricks when it comes to tossing the perfect bag.

The most basic cornhole bag toss is easy to perform.  Simply flip it with your wrist as though you are slinging a frisbee.  When done correctly, it should spin through the air as though it is turning on an axis.  This is the best toss to use when there are no other bags sitting on the board.  This way you can aim for the front half of the surface and the spinning motion will often carry it right into the hole for a three point score.  Getting an early lead in corn toss games is quite advantageous.

If there are already bags on the board which are blocking the hole, there is another pitch which will work better.  In this situation, you should spin the bag around a horizontal axis.  Simply turn your writst down by 90 degrees and sling it underhand.  In basketball terms this is often called the “granny toss”.  This throw is useful because the end-over-end motion can carry the bag right over top the other bags and into the hole.

One final pitch that can be very useful in some situation is the “knuckle bag”.  Much like the knuckleball in baseball, this is thrown so that there is virtually no revolving motion in midair.  This toss can be more difficult to control, but it is very effective in scenarios when one is playing with very slick boards.  The lack of spin will create more friction on impact and allow the bag to slow down more quickly, making a ringer more probable.

As you can see, there are numerous ways to pitch cornhole bean bags, and one should take time to practice each one.  You never know when a game scenario could arise that would demand a less conventional toss.  Having a wider repertoire of throws at your disposal will allow you to win more often than your less-prepared friends and rivals.

Hockey Mini-Bio – Alexander Ovechkin

Alexander Ovechkin is arguably the most exciting, eclectic player of his generation. Here is a quick bio on the National Hockey League star. Alex came from an athletic family with his father being a very skilled soccer player and his mother being a two time Olympic Gold medal winning basketball player.
Alexander picked up a stick very early in life but it was at the age of eight that his older brother Sergei introduced him to organized hockey. He was the first to notice Alex’s talent and made sure that he got to all of his games when his parents weren’t able to. Unfortunately Sergei died in a tragic car accident while still in his early twenties. We often see Ovechkin kiss the sky after scoring, this is why.Alexander took hockey quite seriously and pushed himself hard to excel. He was only eleven years old and playing in the Moscow Dynamo system that he broke legendary Pavel Bure’s goal record.
At only sixteen years of age he was already well known on the international scene, leading The Russian Junior National Team to a gold medal. One year later he was selected to play in the Ceska Pojistovna Cup, becoming the youngest player ever to lace them up in that tourney. Through his later teens he would continue to dominate the international scene. At nineteen he was the youngest player in the World Cup tournament. That same year he captained Russia to a solver medal in the World Juniors. Alexander Ovechkin’s resume was already pretty well padded when he became the first overall selection in the 2004 NHL entry draft. What Alex has done in his young NHL career is surely going to culminate with a few Stanley Cups and unless injury cuts his career short a lock for a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Here are a few quick notes on some of Alexander Ovechkin’s  accomplishments:
- broke a rookie record with 425 shots
- 4th player in league history to have 200 goals in his fourth season
- the first Washington Capital to score 50 goals three times
- Alex has his own lone of clothing

The Importance of Sharp Skates When Playing Ice Hockey

Many new ice hockey players simply do not realize the importance of having sharp ice hockey or youth hockey skates while playing the fast paced sport on ice. When you are brand new to skating, you might not really be able to tell the difference between sharp and dull skates, however once you get the basics down you quickly realize that you need sharp edges to maneuver around the ice like you want to. Playing hockey you have to have good control on your skates in order to be able to skate forward, backwards, stop and cross over while turning. Sharp ice hockey skates will allow for you to have a good amount of control over your speed and control while on the ice.

If you skate once or twice a week, you probably won’t need to get your skates sharpened much more than once a month, but if you are like a lot of elite hockey players who have to spend six to seven days on the ice per week, you will probably want to get your skates sharpened anywhere from one to two times per week. When I was playing hockey competitively I would make sure to sharpen my skates the day before every single game I would play.

laying a lot of hockey will result in getting dull skates faster, however if you take good care of your hockey skates and the blades in particular you will notice that you won’t need to get your skates sharpened quite so often. The biggest thing to remember with hockey skates is to do your best to prevent letting your skate blade touch anything like concrete or metal. I usually like to cover up my skates with cloth skate guards or hockey socks, or you could always purchase some rubber skate guards to prevent letting your skate blades touch anything that might rough up the blade, even your ice hockey gear could potentially dull your skates.

If for some reason you end up losing an edge while you are playing hockey you might want to invest in a stone for your skate blade. You can buy a stone from pretty much any hockey pro shop or ice rink and they are very inexpensive but very useful too for when you get in a quick bind.

If you are a hockey player who already has the basics of skating down, but you are struggling to get more control of your feet while on the ice, you might want to consider getting your skates sharpened a little more often.

Why is Golf Becoming So Popular Among Women?

One of the most interesting things that is occurring in the golfing world is the fact that more and more women are choosing to play golf.  If you have ever wondered why this trend is occurring, you will want to read the rest of this article.

Traditionally, golfing has been a sport that has been exclusive to men.  However, due to the influence of three reasons, this is no longer so.  Let’s examine each of these reasons.

The first reason that more women are choosing to play golf is because of the heavy advertising that is being performed by many of the golf accessories companies.  These companies have realized that they can dramatically increase their sales by selling golfing products to both men and women.  As such, it is much more common now for these companies to advertise their products on television shows that are primarily oriented towards women.

The second reason that golfing is becoming more popular among women is because women are becoming aware of the health benefits associated with the sport.  If a woman decides to walk the golf course (all eighteen holes), it can be a phenomenal cardiovascular workout.  Additionally, now that the benefits of socialization on one’s health have been identified, women often find that playing a round of golf with the ladies can be quite relaxing and fun.

The last reason that golfing is becoming so popular among women has to deal with the corporate world.  It is no secret that a lot of the important corporate and career affecting decisions are made on the golf course.  As a result, many women have decided to take up the sport as a vehicle to gain access to these venues.

As we have demonstrated, more and more women are choosing to pick up the sport of golf.  If the past trends are any indication of the future, you can expect to see a lot more women on the golf course.
