Installing Low Voltage Lighting Systems

One of the easiest and best ways to add contemporary outdoor lighting to your property is to install low-voltage lighting. Unless you need to install an outdoor socket to plug the transformer into, its completely do-it-yourself, saving you money on electricians and landscape architects. Here’s a few tips to installing your own landscape lighting system.
The first thing that you need to do is decide where you’re going to install your lights. Try to build your plan around several main elements in your landscape that you want highlighted. These can be trees, tall shrubs, statues, walls, or even the entrance to your home itself. Also think about things that need to be lit up for safety and security. This includes dark spots in corners, hazardous steps and curbs, and frequently used pathways like your driveway.
Once you’ve decided on where you want to place your lights, you need to decide where you’re going to place your transformer. Ideally you want to find a place that already has a grounded socket and is out of sight and out of the way but also in the center of your lights. If you have a shed that has electricity run to it, it should be great for this. If not, you might have to hire an electrician to install a socket where you would like to install your transformer.
Once you’ve installed you landscape lighting transformer, all that’s left is to install your lights. To do this follow your plans and make sure that all the light fixtures that you buy are at least rated for outdoor use. If you have any up lights they should be rated at least IP6 or higher. Make sure to never, ever use an indoor light outdoors. It will result in ruining the light and possibly shocking whoever is unfortunately enough to touch it. Also make sure the wires that you run are rated at least “water-resistant-U.L. approved for outdoor use” as well.
