Solo Sentiments

There is a secretly growing addiction prevalent in different parts of the world today, particularly in the more developed countries and regions. It is happening inside computer rental shops and bedrooms that have not been purged of its clutter in weeks, even months. It is the addiction to video games.

Technology is advancing at breakneck speed today that new cell phone models are being released almost each week. The same goes for products like video game consoles. In the 1990s there were just the Game Boy, SNES, Atari, and the family computer. You can play games like Pong, Tetris, Family Feud, Pac-Man, and the earlier version of Super Mario. Their graphics were simple as were their mechanics. No complicated keystrokes, no 3-D landscapes and 360-degree view of the characters of the game. The video games today have these and more. They have much more detailed storylines, subplots within the main plot, subquests within quests, and though it may seem like these things should make games intimidating to play from start to finish, gamers actually are enjoying them—and getting addicted to them. You might have heard of God of War and World of Warcraft. These are just two of the games people are getting hooked to these days. On Facebook there are various games too that aren’t even graphically advanced but are addicting all the same, such as Mafia Wars. These games draw you into a different world. For an hour or two (or more) you get to be a hero slaying zombies with your sword or pistol, or you get to build an army that will annihilate all enemy forces. At times the trouble, however, is pulling yourself out of that world, out of the character that you play, and going back to real life.

If you find yourself stuck in the virtual world of video games and find that the real life you have to go back to is mundane and not as exciting, you know you still have your responsibilities. Have some self-control and discipline and set a limit to your gaming. These games, after all, were created merely to entertain, not to be lived in.
